Reimagining Gender: Breaking Down the Gender Binary
All of us are affected by the gender binary, by societal roles and expectations and by our own relationship to gender.
Yet, some of us experience more discrimination or privilege than others based on our relationships to gender and the binary system in which we live. Together we will explore the roles that colonization and globalization play in creating the Western binary gender system.
We will learn language to describe and engage with gender identities that fit within and outside of the binary, identities that are newly emerging and have existed since time immemorial.
Learning Outcomes:
Begin to understand the relationship between colonization and gender
Understand and begin to unpack the gender binary and its impact on all of us, especially those of us of marginalized gender identities (i.e. Two-Spirit, non-binary, trans)
Identify the relationship between gender and privilege
Learn practical skills to better support people of marginalized gender identities in our workplaces and lives
